During this discussion on Sunday, July 18, 2010, participants observed that fear has both positive and negative aspects.  It is beneficial when it warns us of danger or motivates us to act.  It becomes problematic when it is so paralyzing that we cannot act, or act "irrationally".  Some observed that what we fear depends on our experiences.  As the quote suggests, a solution to unnecessary fear comes from self-examination.

This was the first topic in our new series on the Wisdom of Quotations.
The group generally agreed that a positive self-esteem contributes to accomplishing
chosen tasks.  They also observed that many times we accomplish in order to enhance an otherwise shaky self-esteem.  Plato Greybeard suggested that there is a sounder foundation
on which to base self-esteem, and that is to understand that we deserve to respect ourselves
because we all possess the innate and immutable quality of human dignity.
